New York and Massachusetts in October: Grandpa's 90th birthday. ~mike gradziel. to the index page |
I rode the train down to the airport Wednesday after work and took a night flight out of Los Angeles that arrived in New York at 9am. We circled for a while waiting for fog to lift, but the view and the extra chance to sleep made it agreeable to me. Fall colors splashed across the fields and wooded hills below and fog hugged the lowlands while fair weather clouds drifted along eastward. After we landed, I got a car and drove into the heart of the Adironcacks for old time's sake, stopping at a favorite after-hike diner and mountaineering gear shop before hurrying with increasing urgency through Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Watertown, and Syracuse on ym way to Rochester. There I met up with Mitch and Emily at their place. We went out to Dinosaur Barbecue for heaps of meat and pitchers of beer and somehow I stayed awake through it all. Friday I had lunch at the Grandparents' place in Stanley and continued on to Ithaca to see my sister's place and walk through downtown in a steady rain that continued until Sunday.
